DIY Carpet Removal: Step-by-Step Guide

What you need: Utility knife with fresh blades · Pliers · Heavy-duty bin bags (contractor bags) · Knee pads (optional but helpful) · Work gloves · Flat pry bar (for tack strips if replacing them)

1
Clear the room entirely
15–30 min
All furniture must be completely out. Do not try to move furniture room-to-room as you go — the installer will need the room fully empty. Store items in the garage, driveway, or another room.
2
Cut the carpet into strips
10–15 min
Score the carpet with a utility knife into 3-ft-wide strips running parallel to a wall. Do not cut all the way through in one pass — score and fold. Multiple cuts reduce tearing. A dull blade is dangerous — use a fresh blade.
3
Pull carpet from tack strips
5–10 min
In one corner, grab the carpet edge with pliers and pull firmly upward at a 45° angle. The carpet will release from the tack strips along the wall. Once one strip is started, you can grab it by hand.
4
Roll and bag each strip
10–15 min
Roll each 3-ft strip tightly as you pull it up. Cut rolls into manageable lengths (6–8 ft) for bagging. Use heavy-duty contractor bags — regular bin bags will tear. Bag immediately to keep the work area clear.
5
Remove the carpet pad
10–15 min
The pad is usually stapled or glued to the subfloor. Pull it up in strips (same method as carpet). If it crumbles, pull it in sections. Wear a dust mask if the pad is very old.
6
Pull up staples and check tack strips
10–20 min
Remove staples with pliers or a flat pry bar. Check tack strips — if they are in good condition (sharp tacks pointing upward, firmly attached), leave them in place. If rotted, broken, or with flat tacks, remove and replace. Replacement cost: $0.15–$0.30/sqft.
7
Inspect the subfloor
5–10 min
Before the installer arrives, check the subfloor for: soft spots (possible rot), squeaks (loose boards), raised nail heads (hammer them in), and levelness. Issues found now are much cheaper to fix than issues found mid-installation.

Glued-Down Carpet: Different Rules

Important: If your home was built before 1980, have the floor adhesive tested for asbestos before removing glued-down carpet or scraping adhesive. Asbestos testing costs $25–$50 per sample. Do not disturb it until you know.
